Hibs have more at stake

Hibs have more to play for than Rangers when the two clubs meet at Ibrox on Wednesday in the penultimate round of Championship group matches in the Scottish Premiership. Davis Gray’s side can still sneak into Europe if they can win both of their remaining games and Motherwell slip up.

Hibs got back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard-fought 3-1 victory at Falkirk, although the fans are still stewing from their Edinburgh derby defeat at the end of last month. The fact that Kieron Bowie, who was sold in January, remains their joint-top goalscorer with eight tells you a lot about what has gone wrong this term.

The Easter Road club were the second-highest scorers in the division after the first round of fixtures in 2026, but have subsequently scored only 20 times in 15 matches. Joint-top scorer Jamie McGrath misses out here through suspension amid a spate of red cards that have seen Hibs players dismissed in three of their last four Premiership games.

Ibrox has seen some high-scoring games

But if Hibs can keep all eleven players on the pitch at Ibrox they should have a good chance of claiming at least a point. Rangers have lost their last three games and can fold like a pack of cards when pressure is applied.

Unlike the visitors, Danny Rohl’s side have nothing to play for and, with the team stuck in third place and coming off an Old Form loss, they should expect things to get toxic if they start badly.

Despite some low-scoring previous encounters between these clubs, the trend points towards goals on Wednesday. Seven of Rangers’ last eight home games have featured at least four while half of Hibs’ last eight on the road have too, so back over 3.5 in the contest which could be pretty open from the start.
