Atletico Paranaense vs Millonarios Predictions

Atletico Paranaense kicked their season off on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at Rio Branco PR in the regional league, with that following on from one win and three draws at the end of last season to make it five games without defeat.

This might not have been the most emphatic finish to their Brazilian Serie A campaign, but it allowed them a two point lead over Corinthians as they finished 6th in the table and qualified for the Copa Libertadores.

Whilst Atletico Paranaense’s season may have been riddled by inconsistency, they have done well to beat off competition for the Copa Libertadores positions and will be looking forward to their first campaign in the competition since 2014.

That 2014 campaign ended in the group stages as they finished 3rd in what was their first participation in the tournament since they were runners up in 2005. They aren’t regulars in the Cope Libertadores, but when they do make it through they tend to do alright.

Millonarios aren’t regular faces in South America’s top club competition either, with their last and only recent appearance being in 2013. Prior to that they hadn’t taken part since 1997, and it’s no surprise given their efforts in 2013. They lost five of their six group games to finish bottom of the group. Away from home they lost all three and failed to score a single goal.

Atletico Paranaense, on the other hand, have won eight of their last 11 home games in the Copa Libertadores and lost just twice. In all competitions they have won eight and drawn one of their last nine matches, so they will be a formidable adversary on Wednesday.

The hosts have scored at least two goals in four of their last six home games in all competitions and in five of their last eight home games in the Copa Libertadores. Millonarios are at a severe quality disadvantage here, and they have managed to concede at least two in two of their last five away days in Colombia. I fancy Atletico Paranaense to try and finish the tie off in the first leg here, and odds of 10/11 for Atletico Paranaense Over 1.5 Team Goals look very good value. I’m going for that along with a 2-0 correct score predictions at 5/1.
