Reason For Barcelona vs Bayern Munich Predictions

  • Bayern Munich are in the midst of an 18-match winning streak.
  • Bayern Munich have a 100% record in the Champions League this season.
  • The Bavarians are averaging 3.9 goals per 90 minutes in the competition this term
  • Barcelona kept just two clean sheets in eight Champions League matches this season.

Heavyweights meet in Lisbon for quarter final clash

In a star-studded Champions League quarter final line-up this week, Barcelona’s heavyweight clash with Bayern Munich on Friday evening stands apart as the headline act.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich – who have won the Champions League five times each – are again considered among the frontrunners to land club football’s most prestigious piece of silverware in 2020, though several factors indicate the Bavarians have the edge.

While few clubs can match Barcelona for continental pedigree and success in the modern era, Los Cules, who have made the Champions League quarter finals every single season since 2009, entre Friday’s do-or-die knockout tie as a team in transition.

Barcelona have yet to taste defeat in this season’s competition – an impressive feat having navigated tricky group games against Inter and Borussia Dortmund, before a tough double header with Napoli in the Last 16.

However, a record that shows three draws, a trio of narrow one goal winning margin victories and just two clean sheets during their run suggests the Catalan giants lack the sparkle of yesteryear.

Lionel Messi is still a consistent provider of magic moments, as evidenced by his wonder goal against Napoli, however, with a waning supporting cast behind him, the Argentine can’t do it all on his own.

Bayern Munich look unstoppable

In contrast, Bayern Munich have been in scintillating form in this year’s Champions League and the Bavarians carry a 100% winning record into Friday’s quarter final.

With 24 goals scored, including 10 in two meetings with Spurs, and just five conceded, the German record champions achieved the best group stage performance in the history of Europe’s premier club competition.

In the last 16, Bayern rag-dolled another Premier League big hitter in Chelsea, smashing seven goals past Frank Lampard’s Blues in a formidable pair of dominant performances.

2020 has been a phenomenal year overall for Bayern so far, and having won each of their last 18 games on the spin and 21 of out of 22 fixtures in total since January 1st, Hansi Flick’s irresistible Die Roten side should prove hard to stop.

Bayern to maintain their surge

While Barcelona’s current side looks a far cry from their all-conquering teams of the past, Bayern Munich continue to look a tour-de-force on the verge of competing an astonishingly successful season.

The Bavarians, averaging 3.9 goals per 90 minutes of Champions League action this term, are playing with such attacking verve at present, that we expect them to outscore and oust Barca on Friday to book a semi-final place at the La Liga giant’s expense.

Bayern are averaging an eye-watering 23 attempts per Champions League game so far this season – almost twice the number of shots mustered by Barca (12.1) during their campaign, while the German champions xGoals against at the other end is exactly half of their Catalonian opponent’s (0.8 to 1.6).

Even with Sergio Busquets and former Bayern star Arturo Vidal back from suspension for Barcelona, Quique Setién’s side looks an inferior outfit to Bayern’s in most areas, and we expect that to be reflected in the outcome of Friday’s quarter final.

At the generous prices quoted, Bayern Munich look an excellent pick to win at the Estadio da Luz this week, while our correct score prediction tips the Bavarians to record a 3-1 victory.

Bayern scored three or more times in seven of their eight Champions League assignments this season, and with 13-goal Robert Lewandowski looking unstoppable, FCB can plunder another trio of goals against a less than convincing Barca team.
