Barnet came away from the opening game of the season with a credible point after a 1-1 draw with well fancied Cambridge United. The Bees trailed into going into the final quarter but they rescued a point thanks to Alex Nichols’ 75th minute strike. That result has led to Barnet boss Martin Allen leading a battle cry for his side not to be ‘Johnny Average’ in the middle of the table and for them to challenge in the promotion picture. They will have to bounce back from Tuesday’s heavy defeat in the League Cup though as Milwall comfortably dispatched them with a 4-0 victory.

It was a tough night in the League Cup for Accrington as they eventually triumphed on penalties against Bradford City. Stanley had to rebuild after last season after they narrowly missed out on an automatic promotion place and then failed in the play-offs  but they got their season off to a confident start by defeating recently relegated Doncaster Rovers on the opening day. Much of last season’s success was built on a strong start to the season and boss John Coleman knows that if he is to be in the promotion picture this term then his side will have to repeat that trick.
