FC Basel vs FC Thun Predictions
The Swiss Super League, which has been won by Basel in each of the last 6 seasons got going almost a month ago now and predictably it is the champions who are setting the early pace.
Basel have won all of their opening 4 games with only Grasshopper providing them with a real test although they did have to come from behind to win 3-1 at Luzern at the weekend. The goals have been spread throughout their team with Argentine midfielder Matias Delgado their top scorer so far with 3 goals.
Prominent in the minds of Basel supporters at this time of year is the race to make the group stages of the Champions League. They impressively dispatched Polish champions Lech Poznan 4-1 on aggregate in their first qualifier and have a play-off with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv to look forward to next week. That shouldn’t really have any effect on team selection here though and Basel are more likely to rest players when they visit minnows Meyrin in the Swiss Cup at the weekend.
That means it could be a long evening from FC Thun with Basel looking as dominant as ever. Thun finished 4th last season to make the early Europa League qualifying rounds and their early ventures in Europe have gone better than their league matches so far this term.
They have lost 3 of their opening 4 Swiss Super Leauge fixtures but have made it into the Europa League play-off round and to the brink of the more lucrative group stages which would be a fine achievement for the club. They beat Hapoel Be’er Sheva before coming through on away goals against FC Vaduz, who are based in Liechtenstein but also play in the Swiss Super League.
There will few people in Basel expecting anything other than a home win on Wednesday night though. FC Thun did grab a 1-1 draw in their first visit to St Jakob Park last season but failed to win any of their 4 meetings with the dominant force in Swiss football.
Basel are looking good having won all of their 7 competitive fixtures so far this season as well as picking up impressive pre-season wins over PSV and Bayer Leverkusen. They should be far too strong for FC Thun here.
