Bayern Munich vs Schalke Predictions

Matchday 30 is upon us in the Bundesliga and in each of the last three campaigns, Bayern Munich were crowned champions by the close of play on this matchday. Bayern, however, find themselves having to wait a bit longer in the 2015/2016 season, with second-placed Borussia Dortmund a distant threat, seven points adrift and still in with a theoretical chance of winning the Bundesliga. Victory at home for Bayern Munich would take them onto 78 points total. Only once before, in their record breaking 2012/2013 season, did they have such a high number of points after thirty matches. Manuel Neuer makes his 157th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern Munich against his former club; overtaking the number of appearances he made whilst at Schalke.

Schalke 04 earned themselves a point in the “Ruhr” derby with a 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund last Sunday. Schalke put in an impressive shift against the second-placed in-form side, though admittedly Dortmund played a weakened side in order to rest players for their Europa League quarter-final second leg. However, the point keeps Schalke firmly in the running for a place in Europe. They currently sit in seventh-place in the league, outside of the two allotted Europa League spots on goal difference, and three points behind fourth-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the race for the two remaining Champions League qualification places.

Schalke 04 are, however, going to have a hard time coming away with anything from this match. Bayern Munich looked impressive in their midweek away performance against Portugese giants Benfica in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final. With their 1-0 advantage on aggregate from the first leg, this 2-2 draw was enough to see them through to the semi finals for a fifth consecutive season. If the best team in the league’s current form wasn’t enough to be concerned about, Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last ten competitive games against Schalke (W8 D2) and they have won all nine of their Bundesliga fixtures following a Champions League match. We expect the only consolation that Schalke will be able to take away from this match is Bayern Munich’s recent tendency towards smaller scoring wins (three 1-0’s from their last four won). Combining the analysis above with the statistics below, expect under 3.5 goals with a Bayern Munich win of 2-0 at 6/1 to be top value bets for this match.
