Tip Reasoning

  • Sporting have won 11 consecutive games in all competitions, and are unbeaten in league action this campaign.
  • The visitors have kept four consecutive league clean sheets, and six in their last seven Primeira Liga outings.
  • Sporting have lost once in 46 league games, although that defeat was a 4-3 reverse on this ground. Sporting’s last defeat prior to their astonishing run also came here, in July 2020.

Lisbon Derby Crucial as Title Race Heats Up

The big three of Portuguese football are serving up an incredibly tight title race this campaign, with Sporting trailing fellow unbeaten side FC Porto by mere goal difference, and Benfica sitting just one point behind the duo. Friday night’s Lisbon derby sees third host second, and could prove crucial in shaping this title race.

Benfica go into this game off the back of one of the most bizarre episodes in recent European football history. They were forced to face Belenenses SAD despite a crippling Covid outbreak leaving their opponents with just nine players, including two keepers, and the match was later abandoned with the Eagles 7-0 up, after their hosts went down to six through injuries. Benfica are the league’s highest scorers with a massive 34 in 12, although it must be acknowledged that seven came in that bizarre outing, and six the previous week in their hammering of Braga.

Sporting have begun their quest to retain the title strongly, and remain unbeaten, winning 10 and drawing two (one of which was against Porto). Rúben Amorim’s team have won their last 11 games in all competitions, hammering eight goals past Besiktas in two Champions League outings, before eliminating German giants Borussia Dortmund from the competition.

Value in Backing the Visitors for a Result?

Staggeringly, Sporting’s last two league defeats came on this ground; they have only lost one of their last 46 Primeira Liga matches, a run stretching back to July 2020. Friday night’s clash promises to be tight and competitive, but full of quality, with Portugal’s big guns neck-and-neck in the table.

With Sporting having kept four straight league clean sheets, and six in the last seven, as well as boasting the league’s meanest defence after conceding just four goals in 12 matches, I’m backing them to get something when they venture across Lisbon.

I am, however, cautious of the threat posed by Benfica, whose talisman Darwin Nunez has eight league goals this season, and am looking to the double chance market for my main tip. A tense and competitive 1-1 draw looks a solid correct score prediction, as the champions look to preserve their unbeaten record.
