Blackburn and Middlesbrough played out a pair of goalless draws in the Championship last season but their latest showdown at Ewood Park can make up for those drab displays.
Having lost in last season’s playoff final to Hull, Middlesbrough will have lofty ambitions of sealing a Premier League return and they got off to a winning start in their league opener at home to newly-promoted Lincoln.
However, Boro trailed 1-0 before turning on the style with a brace of new signing Will Lankshear rewarding them with a deserved success given that they had dominated possession and won the shot count 23-10.
That came on the back of a 1-0 win against Wrexham in the first round of the EFL Cup and they will be hopeful of making it three on the spin against Blackburn.
But Rovers will be in a pretty buoyant mood too, having won 2-1 at Burton in their cup clash before sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Wolves in their Championship curtain-raiser.
Tony Mowbray has demanded that his side play a more attacking brand of football, which should lend itself to being involved in more high-scoring matches, and Wolves needed an injury-time penalty to pinch a point.
Rovers carried a serious threat at Molineux against a team still inheriting Premier League quality after last season’s relegation and the goals should flow at Ewood Park.
Middlesbrough’s abundance of forward talent makes them the most likely victors, though, and another 2-1 win for the visitors makes plenty of appeal.
