Tip Reasoning

  • Middlesbrough have drawn two of their last four Championship away games.
  • Blackburn drew their last home game against Huddersfield.
  • Three of the last four meetings between the clubs have finished in draws, all with fewer than 2.5 goals.

Draw looks good for meeting of tactical twins

Blackburn Rovers should perform better than they did against Hull when Middlesbrough visit Ewood Park this weekend, although it may not be enough to get the win.

Rovers’ automatic promotion hopes were dealt a blow in east Yorkshire on Wednesday as the Tigers, roared on in front of their new owners, ended Blackburn’s ten-game unbeaten run in the league. Two controversial refereeing decisions went against them, but manager Tony Mowbray admitted his side were not good enough after the final whistle.

Fundamentally, Blackburn are still one of the tightest defensive units in the division and it won’t be easy for their promotion rivals Boro to extend their five-game winning run. Chris Wilder’s men needed to dig deep to maintain that momentum against Reading last week, but the two late goals from Matty Crooks will increase the growing belief on Teesside that Boro can get back to the Premier League this season.

Efficient visitors could cancel Rovers out

Efficient Boro have scored eight goals in their last six Championship matches, which has been good for 16 points, largely because they have conceded just twice across that run. Both teams operate systems based around three-man defences with wing-backs and they could cancel each other out on Monday night.

In Boro’s last two away games – both also against similar systems to their own – they played out a 0-0 draw at Stoke before a getting stoppage-time winner at Blackpool seconds after the hosts had made it 1-1. Goals, therefore, may well be on short supply and a draw looks a solid starting point in match result betting.

The signs are even more encouraging when examining the last four meetings between the clubs – which have finished 1-1, 0-1, 1-1 and 0-0. A correct score play of 1-1 should give a great chance of return in this game between clubs that are so similar in their form and style that they could be tactical twins.
