Both Teams To Score @ 4/6

We use stars to rate our confidence in our tips, with 3 being most confident to 1 being the least.
Bolton 2-1 @ 15/2

Reason For Bolton vs Southend Predictions

  • 79% of Bolton’s points have been earned at home.
  • Southend have conceded at least one goal in each of their last 12 matches.
  • Southend have scored in 73% of their away matches.

A new era

Before the new season kicked into gear, both Bolton Wanderers and Bury looked a long way off being able to compete in the league. However, while the latter club was unable to fulfill it’s fixtures and was kicked out of the league, the former was able to play it’s games with youth team players until a takeover bid rescued the club and brought in some much needed reinforcements.

It is a situation which has given a somewhat skewed look to Bolton’s statistics and if you just had a glance at the table and saw them with a measly two points, you would be forgiven for thinking they are the league’s whipping boys. However, a 12 point deduction for going into administration and the fact that they have played a few less games than those around them means that they have actually been better than the league table suggests.

The hosts have won three of their last six games in the league and although they are without a win in their last three, the fact that 79% of their points and 64% of their goals have come on home soil means that they will be confident of being able to earn a vital victory this weekend.

Campbell unable to repeat the same trick

Sol Campbell may have had to bide his time before getting into football management, but his performance at cash strapped Macclesfield Town in League Two last season clearly showed that he has a talent and, although the financial restraints eventually led to him leaving the club, it was not long before he was back in demand.

However, things have not exactly gone to plan at Southend United so far this season as they are in miserable form and would be comfortably at the bottom of the league had it not been for this weekend’s opponents’ points deduction.

One of the major challenges for Campbell is to keep find a way to keep the opposition at bay as Southend have conceded a massive 59 times this season, which is a whole 20 times more than anyone else in the division. To give you some perspective, that averages at around 2.8 goals per game, and given that they have conceded 15 times in their last five matches, it is a stat which is not getting better anytime soon.

Goals goals goals

Both teams scored in six of Southend’s last eight league matches and three of Bolton’s last five league matches. They both sit at the bottom of the table in terms of the League One’s best defences and although neither are particularly prolific in front of goal, the strength of the hosts on home soil and the fact Southend perform better on the road suggests that backing both teams to score is the way to go.

In terms of our correct score tip, we think that the improvements made by Bolton since the turbulent opening to the season should be enough to see them through in this one. Although they average just 0.78 goals per home league game so far, that has been improving and their last four home games has seen them score 1.5 goals per game. This, combined with the fact that the visitors concede so frequently, suggests to us that backing a 2-1 home win is the way to go.
