Exiles could cop it at Boreham Wood

Boreham Wood have a fine FA Cup pedigree and they can get the better of League Two basement boys Newport County in the second round on Sunday.

The Hertfordshire club reached the fifth round in the 2021-22 season, where they beat AFC Wimbledon and Bournemouth before losing to Everton. Luke Garrard’s current crop were in the National League South last year, but after going up through the play-offs, they have carried that momentum into 2025-26 and are right in the mix at the top of the table.

This second-round clash pits the surprise package of the National League, who sit two points off the top, against a team under new management. Ex-Leicester City star Christian Fuchs has just been plunged into the thick of a grim relegation battle at Rodney Parade.

He at least halted Newport’s four-game losing streak at the weekend as they held Barrow to a 2-2 home draw, but the Exiles have lost five of their last eight games. They also needed penalties to squeeze past Gillingham in round one.

Newport could bear the Brunt of in-form forward

That form is in stark contrast to the Wood, who have won seven of their last eight in all competitions and thrashed League Two side Crawley Town 3-0 in the first round.

Matt Rush, Zak Brunt and Abdul Abdulmalik were on target in front of a bumper crowd at the cosy Mangata Developments Stadium in that game. And Brunt looks like he could be a dangerman again after registering three goals and three assists in his last six starts.

Back the Wood to take the win with at least three goals in the game, which has been the case in six of their last seven victories.
