Reason For Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen Predictions

Dortmund had their first hiccup of the new season last time out as they were defeated 3-1 away to Bundesliga newcomers Union Berlin. Coach Lucien Favre will have spent plenty of time analysing the game since – namely, his defence, as they conceded two goals from corners – so injuries to defenders Manuel Akanji and Nico Schulz over the international break are untimely. Every cloud has a silver lining though. Jadon Sancho returns to the squad having scored his first goals for England.

Another standout performer over the international break has been Spanish forward Paco Alcacer. He was Dortmund’s top scorer last season and has been on the score-sheet in each of his eight games so far in 19/20 for club and country after scoring three in two games for Spain. Thorgan Hazard is still ruled out, however, so Julian Brandt should be in the starting XI against his former club.

Bayer Leverkusen still boast an effective attacking line-up, despite selling Brandt to Dortmund over the summer. They scored six goals across two games before their 0-0 draw at home to Hoffenheim last time out and no doubt Kevin Volland, Leon Bailey, Karim Bellarabi and Kai Havertz will be looking to cause Dortmund’s defence some problems on Saturday.

Former-Dortmund boss Peter Bosz will no doubt be aware of his sides’ own defensive issues though. Leverkusen did manage to register their first clean sheet in eight games last time out, but that came against a rebuilding Hoffenheim side. Leverkusen conceded three goals over the two games prior, including two in the opening 25 minutes of their thrilling 3-2 win over newly promoted Paderborn on the opening day.

And it’s not hard to imagine that it will be the attacking players who play the most prominent role in this game. Dortmund have scored the second-most goals so far, while Leverkusen have scored the fifth-most, and yet the two sides share just one clean sheet between them. As such, the goals market – specifically, ‘over 3.5 goals’ – looks a good place to start looking for a bet.

Dortmund are clearly still vulnerable at the back even with veteran Mats Hummels back at the club – no team in the top half has conceded more goals than Dortmund. He is yet to help address their lack of defensive stability from last season, but you could argue that Leverkusen’s own defensive frailties have been worse in the long-term – Bosz’s men have kept just two clean sheets away from home in 2019 (22%).

When you compare the two attacks, you’d have to lean towards Dortmund’s. Der BVB have scored two goals or more in each of their last 18 outings at Signal Iduna Park and they’ve won six of the last eight meetings between the two sides as well. Going off this, we feel there’s reasonable value in backing them to come out on top of a high-scoring scoreline. Our prediction: 3-2 Dortmund.
