Borussia Dortmund vs Liverpool Predictions

After eliminating Tottenham Hotspurs with back-to-back victories in the previous round, Thomas Tuchel’s Borussia Dortmund will face yet another English side. Dortmund have been rather successful in their clashes with Premier League clubs on home soil, with a mere one defeat in ten previous meetings at Signal-Iduna-Park (W6 D3 L1). “Der BVB” are on a sixteen-game undefeated run in all competitions (W14 D2), largely thanks to a series of miraculous displays from their star striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who will be utilised as Dortmund’s main weapon against Liverpool. The Gabon international is enjoying his best season in Dortmund, with 35 goals from 40 appearances so far. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marco Reus will provide additional support from the midfield in Borussia’s attempt to work their way through Liverpool’s defense.

Wining the Europa League seems the only chance Klopp and Liverpool have for any of next season’s European competitions and also their only remaining chance of a trophy this season. Jurgen Klopp is set for an emotional return to Dortmund and seems excited for the chance to show his Liverpool team the beauty of the city and his former club. Emotions, however, will have to be put aside once the match starts. Liverpool’s performances have not been particularly impressive in Europe, despite managing to stay undefeated throughout the competition so far (W4 D6). Dortmund may be the stronger side on paper, but Klopp is very familiar with almost all of the Dortmund players, so he will, at least, be able to prepare well for the upcoming clash. Philippe Coutinho has scored a few in recent matches and will pose the biggest threat alongside Daniel Sturridge. Simon Mignolet has been solid in the Europa League games and if it hadn’t been for Martial’s penalty in the last round against Manchester United, the Belgian goalkeeper would have kept clean sheets in five consecutive fixtures.

Even though Liverpool have been a stubborn team to better in the Europa League so far this campaign, they are about to face one of the most in-form and lethal attacks in Europe. Borussia Dormund head into this match as clear favourites and they are always impressive on home soil, with Signal-Iduna-Park being an unpenetrable fortress for any visiting team throughout the season. However, Jurgen Klopp will be looking for an active result. With both teams following a similar attacking approach and playing philosophy, Klopp may even see a close defeat as acceptable if they can leave with an away goal to use to their advantage in the 2nd leg. For both hardcore fans of these clubs and neutral lovers of football, expect this to be an entertaining and fierce contest. Combining the analysis above with the statistic below, expect both teams to score in this Europa League quarter-final match with a final score of Borussia Dortmund win 2-1 at 7/1  being a likely outcome.
