      Brighton vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

      • Brighton have struggled for consistency in the league this season but will be hoping to make an impact in the FA Cup.
      • Sheffield Wednesday sit just outside the play-off places in the Championship but have lost three in a row, conceding an average of two goals a game in that time.
      • Brighton have averaged 1.19 goals per game this season and conceded at a rate of 1.38 goals per game on average; 52% of Brighton’s games this season have seen both sides score.
      • Both teams have scored in 15 of Sheffield Wednesday’s 26 games this season, just over 57%. They’ve scored 1.42 goals per game on average, averaging exactly a goal a game conceded.

Can Brighton embark on another cup run?

Brighton were able to reach the semi-finals of this competition last season before a narrow loss to Man City ended their hopes. They’ll be keen for another trip to Wembley this season, although a tough game against Sheffield Wednesday stands in their way.

Brighton had a tough journey to the semi-finals last season, beating Bournemouth in the third round before overcoming three Championship sides prior to their loss against Man City. So they definitely have pedigree in beating opponents at their own level in this competition.

Brighton’s numbers this season are quite average, conceding 1.38 goals per game on average and scoring at a slightly lower rate at 1.19. This, while obviously in a higher league than their opponents this weekend, is a good indication there isn’t too much between these two sides and a tough game could be on the cards for The Seagulls.

Can Sheffield Wednesday continue their good season?

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t really enjoyed much success in this competition in recent years, not making it past the fifth round since 1997. But they are enjoying a good season this year, sitting just a point outside the play-offs at just gone the halfway point. Last season, Wednesday beat Luton Town in a third-round replay before being beaten by Chelsea in the fourth round.

Their run this year gets off to a little harder start but their impressive league form means the playing field is a little more level. Sheffield Wednesday have scored 37 times in 26 games, an average of 1.42 goals per game, and conceded 26 goals, exactly a goal a game.

They’ve been on a poor run recently, though, losing three in a row, and have conceded an average of two goals a game in that time (scoring just one per game). But everything can change in the FA Cup and, while Sheffield Wednesday come into the game as outsiders, they stand a chance of a small scalp as they look to start a cup run of their own.

Owls in the hat for the fourth round?

This looks like it’ll be a really tough game between two sides who look pretty reasonably matched this season and there isn’t a lot to pick between the teams. Both sides have been scoring at a decent rate and with their defences not looking much better than average, we’re confident in predicting both teams will find the net in this one.

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t had a good run in recent weeks but we’re backing them to come away from this match still in the hat. However, it’s hard to make a case for them winning this match, especially away from home.

A 1-1 draw therefore looks looks a fair shout, with Brighton still having one eye on maintaining their position above the relegation places and Sheffield Wednesday looking for a result to spark them back into life.
