      Bristol Rovers vs Barnsley Predictions

Barnsley’s return to the Championship was confirmed on Tuesday evening, as both Sunderland and Portsmouth came up short, though the Tykes won’t be celebrating just yet, as they can still go up as champions. For much of the campaign, Barnsley have been in the thick of the promotion scrap, though they’ve rarely been talked about as title contenders. However, thanks to Luton’s recent dip in form, Daniel Stendel’s men go into the final match-day behind the league leaders on goal difference only, so a final-day win would give them every chance of winning the title.

It’s not exactly been an exciting few weeks for Bristol Rovers; the Pirates drew against Wimbledon a fortnight ago, they were beaten narrowly by Rochdale after that, while they drew 0-0 with Fleetwood last time out. Going forward, Graham Coughlan’s men have offered a very limited amount, both in recent weeks and this season overall, though they have kept teams relatively quiet, especially in recent weeks. Rovers have conceded just four goals in their last five matches, conceding more than once in just one of those.

Defensively, Rovers will be confident of putting up a fight on Saturday, though it would be no surprise if they faltered at the other end of the pitch. Even at home, the Pirates have found it tough to impose themselves, as they’ve scored an average of just a single goal per game. They’ve also failed to score in a rather hefty 45% of their home matches this season. Moreover, Rovers have a reasonably poor home record against teams that currently reside in the top six, as they’ve won zero out of five, four of which they’ve lost. They’ve scored in just two of those five, while they’ve kept just one clean sheet and have conceded a total of ten.

Barnsley did recently slip-up when visiting Burton, though the Brewers offer more going forward than Bristol Rovers, that’s for sure. Aside from the defeat at Pirelli Stadium, the Tykes, who have League One’s fourth best away record, have performed well on their travels. They made light work of beating Plymouth in their most recent away match, while they’ve won eight of their 11 travelling matches against teams that currently reside in the bottom half.

In addition to boasting a good record away against bottom-half teams, Barnsley have simply offered more going forward than the hosts have at home. That extra forward quality could be the difference on Saturday.

At the current prices, the best betting option appears to be ‘Barnsley to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’. This is a big opportunity for the visitors to stake a claim for the title and they ought to have enough about them to get the job done, though punters shouldn’t expect Stendel’s men to go crazy at Memorial Stadium. For all Rovers’ lack of attacking quality will likely cost them, the hosts have managed to keep things respectable at home against the likes of Luton, Portsmouth and Sunderland this season.
