Manchester City 3-1 @ 11/1

Reason For Burnley vs Manchester City Predictions

  • Burnley’s Premier League games this season have averaged 2.85 goals per game.
  • Manchester City have only seen Under 2.5 Goals in one of their seven Premier League away games this term.
  • Burnley have lost all three of their meetings with the current Premier League top four, conceding an average of three goals per game and scoring an average of one goal per game.

Clarets look to get ahead in fierce mid-table battle

Burnley’s topsy-turvy season took another twist on Saturday as they were beaten 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace, bringing them crashing back down to earth after back-to-back 3-0 wins over West Ham and Watford in November.

That being said, Sean Dyche won’t have too many complaints about how this season is panning out. The Clarets are an impressive 8th in the Premier League at the time of writing, just two points adrift of 5th place Tottenham. The mid-table battle is fiercely close though, meaning they are only four points off the precariously positioned Everton in 17th.

Burnley have often been seen as a rather defensive minded team, but this season has seen their matches take an exciting turn. In fact, their top flight outings this season have averaged 2.85 goals per game, and they have failed to find the net just three times. This newfound goalscoring prowess has taken its toll at the other end of the pitch though, as evident in the 3-0 and 4-2 losses at home to Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

Manchester City’s title hopes take a catastrophic blow

Manchester City will be hoping to take advantage of this defensive frailty, especially after their hopes of retaining the Premier League title took another huge blow on Saturday. They were held to a 2-2 draw at Newcastle, leaving them 11 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool and in need of something of a miracle.

Undoubtedly, The Citizens’ biggest weakness this season is in the defensive areas of the pitch. They have conceded an average of 1.14 goals per game in the league, and away from home they have managed just two clean sheets in seven attempts. Of course, they have found the net in all seven of these games as well, treating the neutrals to some enthralling and entertaining matches.

Goals on the cards at Turf Moor on Tuesday

As you might expect, the result has been a plethora of goals to enjoy. All but one of Manchester City’s away games have seen at least three goals, with an average of four goals per game being scored.

Burnley, meanwhile, have seen at least three goals in four of their seven home matches and in 64% of their overall Premier League matches. All three of their meetings with the other members of the Premier League top four have seen at least three goals, so we think backing Over 2.5 Goals is a great value offering here.

Each of these three matches has ended in defeat for the Clarets though, and we can see them losing again here. They are facing a Manchester City side that have netted an average of 2.57 goals per away game in the league this season, and Burnley have conceded an average of three goals per game in all of their meetings with the top four.

The Manchester City defensive issues we mentioned earlier mean that we are expecting a goal for the hosts, but the odds on offer for Manchester City to claim a third 3-1 win away from home in the league do look enticing.
