Rangers ready to close gap on title rivals

Celtic’s 2-0 defeat at Falkirk last weekend has handed Rangers a golden opportunity to close in on the champions at the top of the Scottish Premiership. 

The Gers could move to a point behind their Old Firm rivals with success at St Mirren on Saturday and it is a chance that Derek McInnes can take. 

Goalscoring has been an issue for the Light Blues, but the Ibrox side have found their stride to score 12 goals in their last five games. 

There has not been too much wrong with Rangers’ chance creation and McInnes’ men hit 17 efforts on goal and recorded 74 per cent possession in a 1-0 Scottish League Cup success over Aberdeen last weekend. 

The expected goal totals of Rangers’ last 2.20, 4.20 and 2.29 in their last three Scottish top-flight games against Hearts, St Johnstone and Dundee and those are healthy numbers in the context of a tie with St Mirren. 

The Buddies have lost six of their last eight league games, they hit only one shot on target in a 1-0 defeat at Motherwell last time out and the Perth side were hammered 5-1 by Rangers in a Scottish League Cup tie at Ibrox earlier this season.
