Reason For Burnley vs Southampton Predictions

  • Burnley are unbeaten against Southampton since 2016, winning four and drawing three meetings since then.
  • Burnley have lost just one of their last eight Premier League home games.
  • Southampton have lost all three competitive games this season.
  • Burnley have played out three 1-1 draws in their last five home league games.

Burnley look to build on midweek success

Burnley opened their Premier League campaign with an unusually high scoring affair at the King Power Stadium last weekend, losing 4-2 at the hands of the rejuvenated Leicester side who scored three in quick succession in the second half.

The Clarets did manage to bounce back in midweek with a relatively comfortable win at Millwall, and they’ll be fairly confident in their chances as they host a poor looking Southampton outfit.

Saints hope to stop the rot at Turf Moor

The visitors ended the 2019/20 campaign on a high as they remained unbeaten for the final seven matches of the campaign, but Ralph Hasenhuttl hasn’t been able to maintain that momentum and they have started the season very poorly.

Southampton’s 1-0 loss at Selhurst Park provided their initial blow, but they followed that up in even more disappointing fashion as they were knocked out of the EFL Cup at home to Brentford before suffering a 5-2 mauling at home to Spurs.

The confidence this Saints squad will have been carrying from their promising end to last season will have well and truly evaporated by now, and a trip to Turf Moor is never an appealing one when you’re low on morale.

Clarets set to extend unbeaten record against Southampton

Indeed, Burnley have lost just one of their last eight Premier League home games and can look back upon a fantastic recent record against Southampton. Their last defeat to the Saints was all the way back in 2016, with four wins and three draws being played out since then. What’s more, Southampton haven’t won away at Burnley since a Championship clash in 2007.

All things considered, backing Burnley to get something from this game looks incredibly good value, although with three 1-1 draws in their last five league home games that’s the obvious choice for our correct score prediction.

Chris Wood is worth a look in the anytime goalscorer market as well. The New Zealand international scored Burnley’s first last weekend and has now scored in each of Burnley’s last four Premier League matches.

Burnley injuries and team news

Sean Dyche remains at the mercy of the physios, with as many as seven players missing on Saturday. Ashley Barnes has returned to full training and could make the bench after a lengthy injury layoff, but Jay Rodriguez was forced off in midweek and could miss out.

Robbie Brady and James Tarkowski are doubts too, while Johann Gudmundsson, Ben Mee and Jack Cork are all ruled out. New signing Dale Stephens could be involved at Turf Moor, though.

Southampton injuries and team news

New Saints signing Mohammed Salisu isn’t quite at match fitness yet so will have to wait to make his debut, with Nathan Redmond joining him on the doubtful list.

Despite their dreadful performance last weekend, Ralph Hasenhuttl is likely to name a similar starting lineup due to the squad’s rather limited options.
