Visitors can seal Clermont’s relegation fate with victory

Clermont’s torrid season sees the Lancers bottom of Ligue 1 with two games to play and their top flight status could be ended when they entertain Europe-chasing Lyon at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied on Sunday.

Pascal Gastien’s men have won just one of their last six in the league and have conceded 54 goals this season – the second worst in the division below second bottom Lorient (63).

Lyon’s terrible start to the campaign looks to be a distant memory after an impressive turnaround in 2024, winning 14 of their 20 matches this calendar year in all competitions, and Pierre Sage’s side are now just two points away from sixth placed Lens and a coveted Europa Conference League spot.

Four of Clermont’s last five games have seen both teams score while the same is true of each of Lyon’s last five. The net could therefore bulge at both ends but Lyon’s recent form should see them come away with all three points and, after netting at least three goals in five of their last six in all competitions, a 3-1 winning scoreline looks a tempting prospect.
