Gunners to bounce back at the first attempt
The Premier League title race was blown wide open on Saturday when Aston Villa moved to within three points of the Gunners after scoring a stoppage-time winner at Villa Park against Mikel Arteta’s men.
The Gunners’ 2-1 defeat handed Manchester City the advantage and Pep Guardiola’s side delivered by beating Sunderland 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal’s advantage is now just two points at the top of the table, but their cushion at the top of the League Phase table in the Champions League is three points.
Arteta’s outfit have won all five of their games and looked good doing so. They have only conceded one goal and have netted 14 in what has been a sublime start to their European adventure.
Arsenal made a statement in their last European encounter as they beat Bayern Munich 3-1, and they have also secured wins over Slavia Prague, Atletico Madrid, Olympiacos, and Athletic Bilbao.
Club Brugge have entertained their spectators in their first five matches in the Champions League, but they only have four points to show for their efforts.
The Belgian outfit started the League Phase stage of the competition with a 4-1 win over Monaco, but they have since lost 2-1 to Atalanta, 4-0 to Bayern Munich, and 3-0 to Sporting CP. Before that defeat in Portugal, they picked up a point after an entertaining 3-3 draw with Barcelona.
Club Brugge’s results suggest they struggle to live up to the quality when they face some of Europe’s biggest clubs and Arsenal fall into that category.
Arteta’s men should be able to rack up the goals, but a clean sheet is unlikely. Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel are long-term absentees, while William Saliba is still carrying a knock and Riccardo Calafiori limped off against Villa.
The Gunners boss is going to have to tweak his defence once again and they have only kept one clean sheet in their last six outings.
One man that should feature is Gabriel Martinelli, who has scored four goals in as many appearances this season. He has been clinical throughout the competition, having only registered seven shots this season.
