Billy Goats’ revival did not last long

The upcoming Bundesliga programme kicks off on Friday with a clash between two mid-table sides on the slide – Cologne hosting Wolfsburg. The Billy Goats were hanging around in the top six for the first few weeks of the season, but slipped into the bottom half until a home victory over relegation-threatened Mainz earlier this month.

However, their revival did not last long as a 2-1 defeat at Freiburg last weekend left Lukas Kwasniok’s side just five points clear of the relegation zone. Kwasniok has now seen his team go 13 Bundesliga games without keeping a clean sheet.

That trend could continue against a Wolfsburg side who are usually on the front foot.  They gave up an early lead in a 3-1 defeat at the aforementioned Mainz last weekend, leaving Daniel Bauer’s men now just four points clear of the bottom three.

Despite the mounting pressure on both clubs, this clash is likely to be an open affair.  At least three goals have been scored in all four of Cologne’s post-winter break matches and in six of the Wolves’ last seven Bundesliga games overall.
