Viola resurgent

Having initially struggled to carry their Coppa Italia and Europa Conference League form into Serie A, Fiorentina are now flying, winning five of their last six games across all competitions – including their last two in the league. Their inconsistent campaign began with a 3-2 win over Cremonese, who have posted just one league victory since that August meeting, and with Vincenzo Italiano’s side on the up, the visitors will hope for a more comfortable success on Sunday.

Indeed, Thursday’s last-16 first leg win over Sivasspor in the Conference League made it six games unbeaten for Fiorentina, who claimed a shock – but deserved – victory over Milan in their last Serie A outing. The Viola have hit the net 14 times in their last six contests, as well as keeping creditable clean sheets against Sivasspor and Braga. Fiorentina’s away form has often held them back in the last couple of seasons, but they cruised to a 3-0 success at Verona on their last road trip and can dispatch another struggler here.

Cremonese failed to build on their first win of the season – a tempestuous triumph over Roma – last time out, losing a five-goal thriller against Sassuolo. Davide Ballardini has certainly improved Cremonese in an attacking sense, but a run of 11 matches without a clean sheet, with 11 goals conceded in their last five, suggests there is much to be done at the other end. With four defeats in their last six league games, the hosts look unlikely to use that Roma victory as a platform for a great escape, and Fiorentina should have too much quality on Sunday.

Momentum seems to be with Fiorentina at present, and despite their underwhelming league form over the first half of the season, a thrilling end to the campaign awaits them, with two realistic chances of silverware.
