England easing towards Euros

When England ended up in a qualifying group with defending European champions Italy, their path to Euro 2024 looked tricky to say the least. However, after three wins from three – including a win in Naples – the Three Lions are cruising towards a tournament which Gareth Southgate is expected to win.

Their 4-0 win over Malta in the first act of June’s doubleheader has put England six points clear at the top of Group C already. They will look to take another step towards the Euros with a win on Monday, but North Macedonia have previous when it comes to causing upsets.

High-scoring start for visitors

North Macedonia have taken three points from their opening two games in this group. They’ve seen eight goals scored across those two, after their 3-2 home defeat to Ukraine on Friday. They blew a 2-0 lead in that clash, which could cost them down the line.

North Macedonia did look like they could cause problems for England and Italy, having beaten the Italians in a playoff for the 2022 World Cup. They lost only two of their 10 games in that qualifying group, including a 2-1 win at Germany.

The visitors made it to the last edition of the Euros and they scored in two of their three group games. With the visitors heading into this one having seen both teams score in four of their last five matches, we could see another high-scoring clash when they head to Old Trafford.

North Macedonia to cause problems

While England are on a high right now, 12 months ago they hit arguably the low point of Southgate’s spell. Their winless run in June 2022 led to serious questions over his future. The Three Lions’ stars struggled off the back of a tough season and Monday is their final game of an even tougher campaign which included their quarter-final exit in Qatar.

While the hosts are heavy favourites, it’s hard to see this being completely one-sided. North Macedonia have proven themselves as a threat in this group and in huge clashes in the past, so they’re good value to find the net in this trip. The visitors have goalscoring experience in their side, with Enis Bardhi coming into this one having scored in three of their last five internationals. At a huge price, the forward is a great anytime scorer bet in this clash.

However, England have won 23 of their last 24 home qualifiers and this is a side who look excellent going forward. They should have too much for North Macedonia, so back a 3-1 victory for the Three Lions.
