Tip Reasoning

Las Palmas were relegated last weekend in the weakest of possible fashions as they were hammered 4-0 at home by Alaves. Just 7,000 showed up to watch the game, a signal that fans of the Canarian club are utterly disillusioned with life right now and particularly with a president that no coach seems capable of working with.

A little over twelve months earlier they were playing some cracking football and looking like dark-horses for Europe under Quique Setien, with a team that was mostly made up of local players. However the wheels have come off spectacularly since then and they will need to seriously rebuild this summer with or without their latest boss Paco Jemez.

Espanyol are also a side that will be looking for a new direction, after the Barcelona club sacked Quique Sánchez Flores on the eve of their game with Girona last weekend. It has been a very odd campaign for Espanyol, with Sánchez Flores keen on a move to Stoke earlier in the season only for the club to block his move and it’s just felt like wounds haven’t really healed since that dispute.

The former Watford boss took just 1 point from his final 5 games in charge with Espanyol failing to score in all of those matches. However just 48 hours after his dismissal, his old side put in one of their best performances of the season, surprisingly winning 2-0 at Girona in a Catalan derby.

Interim boss David Gallego clearly inspired something in this Espanyol team and they’ll be keen to back that up here and at least end a disappointing season on a bit of a high. In truth they are unlikely to need any more points, given they hold an 11 point advantage on Depor in 18th but they’ll be keen to secure their top flight status as soon as possible and they ought to do that here.

Las Palmas have been shocking in recent weeks and over most of the season in truth. They’ve lost their last five matches to nil and all the fight appears to have gone from them. They’ve lost a huge 71% of their away league games this season and also failed to score in 71% of their away matches. Espanyol are pretty solid at the back, conceding just 0.82 goals per home game and that suggests backing Espanyol to Win to Nil is worth a punt here.

Espanyol aren’t the most thrilling of attacking units though and with the league’s joint third worst goalscoring record, they are unlikely to run riot so going for Espanyol & Under 3.5 Goals also appeals.

Their main and at times only goal threat is Gerard Moreno. Predictably it was he who scored both goals in the win at Girona and he has 14 for the season now in La Liga, exactly half of his team’s fairly pitiful total tally of 28. To put things in some perspective, that is one less than Leo Messi has managed but still 6 more than Las Palmas. Therefore, backing Moreno to score anytime is the only bet that appeals in the goalscorer markets.
