Reason For Everton vs Watford Predictions

Everton welcome fellow Premier League side Watford to Goodison Park on Tuesday evening, as they look to get over Saturday’s disappointing loss by reaching the last eight of the EFL Cup. After a trio of draws, Watford go in search of their first win of the month.

Things at Everton did appear to be improving; they recorded a convincing victory against a useful West Ham side when last in action at this venue, while they were in front away against Brighton at the weekend. However, despite leading on the south coast with little more than 15 minutes remaining, the Toffees ended up returning home with nothing to show for their efforts.

At the start of the campaign, Marco Silva’s men looked like soft touches and they did so again on Saturday. That said, they’ve already beaten Watford at this venue this season so they may be feeling confident, despite Saturday’s disappointing defeat.

If Everton haven’t improved of late, Watford certainly have, as they’ve now gone three matches without tasting defeat. The Hornets are still searching for their first win of the campaign, but after conceding ten goals in two games against Man City and Wolves, three games unbeaten and two clean sheets is a marked improvement.

Over the last few weeks, Quique Sánchez Flores have started to do a much better job of restricting teams. They prevented Sheffield United from scoring, conceding only 0.38 expected goals in the process, they conceded just once away at Tottenham, while they come into this fixture off the back of keeping a clean sheet against Bournemouth, whom they allowed just 0.42 expected goals.

What Watford haven’t done of late is offer a serious threat going forward. They did score against Tottenham, but didn’t create an awful lot in doing so, while they failed to score against both Sheffield United and Bournemouth. An average of 0.83 expected goals for in their last three matches shows that creating scoring opportunities is something that Watford have struggled to do.

When the pair met at this venue earlier in the season, it was a tentative affair, and there wasn’t much between the sides. Everton edged it by a goal to nil, though Watford, who emerged with an expected goal difference of +0.29, were a tad unlucky. The fact that the pair created only 1.89 between them shows that it wasn’t a game full of attacking quality.

Given what we’ve seen from the pair in recent weeks, alongside what the pair produced at this venue earlier in the season, and it’s easy to feel that the visitors are overpriced. For all they’re yet to win in the Premier League, they’ve looked nice and solid of late. Add in the fact that Everton continue to look a bit all over the place, as well as the fact that Watford were marginally the better side when the pair met in the league, and it’s easy to conclude that the chances of Watford getting a positive result are greater than the current odds would have us believe. On this basis, ‘Watford Draw No Bet’ gets the nod.
