Flamengo vs Athletico Paranaese Predictions
- Flamengo scored an average of 2.31 goals a game last season on their way to winning Serie A and also conceded at a rate of less than 1 goal per match.
- Flamengo have scored 8 times in their last 3 matches.
- Flamengo won both league games between the two last term; by 3-2 and 2-0 margins respectively.
Flamengo looking for their first trophy of the year
After a simply stunning campaign last season in which they romped to the Serie A and Copa Libertadores titles under the watch of Jorge Jesus, Flamengo are hoping for similar success this time around. The side has strengthened over the break, bringing in the likes of Leo Pereira, Thiago Maia, Michael and Pedro and having only lost Pablo Mari, they now look a frightening force.
Despite mainly using youngsters in their State League matches, Flamengo are into the final of the first phase and after beating rivals Fluminense in midweek, confidence is high coming into Sunday’s Supercopa. Flamengo have now scored 8 times over their last 3 matches so bring their usual firepower into the clash and they’ll be hoping to use it once again to secure victory.
Athletico are big underdogs
Meanwhile, after a successful couple of years it does feel as though Athletico PR are entering a period of transition. They lost manager Tiago Nunes to Corinthians at the back end of last season and with the likes of Leo Pereira and star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes having also left the club and with winger Rony likely to follow, they look a far weaker outfit than in 2019.
Like Flamengo, Athletico have also been mixing up their selections in the State League but performances haven’t been quite as impressive. Indeed, the side have now failed to win any of their last 3 outings and having lost 2 of said matches, they have little momentum behind them heading into Sunday’s fixture.
Flamengo should be far too strong
Ultimately, this is a trophy Flamengo will be fully expecting to win and it’s hard to see them slipping up. On paper, they looked even more powerful than they did last season; which is quite the proposition considering they were by far the best team in South America throughout 2019.
All things considered, backing Flamengo on a -1 handicap looks the best way to play as far as the betting is concerned. Their attacking firepower should be simply too much for an Athletico outfit that isn’t looking anywhere near the level of last term and we fancy Mengao to run out comfortable 3-0 winners.
