Tip Reasoning

  • Forest Green have conceded 2 goals or more in each of their last 3 matches.
  • Carlisle conceded at least 1 goal in 93% of their away matches.
  • Carlisle have scored in 71% of their away matches.

A drop in form

Forest Green Rovers enjoyed an excellent start to the season as they won plenty of their opening fixtures and put in an excellent platform to build from for the rest of their campaign. Much of that early success came thanks to a solid defensive base and the 27 goals they have conceded so far this season means they currently have the fourth best defensive record in the division.

However, things have tailed off over the last month or so and they go into this contest having claimed just nine points from their last nine league matches. While they are known for their defensive stability, such poor form may have forced Rovers into a new approach as their last three matches have seen an impressive total of 13 goals scored.

Turning things around

Any Carlisle United fan will be able to tell you, it has not exactly been the season they were hoping for in League 2 and they go into this weekend’s clash more worried about the drop zone than they do about keeping pace with others for the top seven. However, Carlisle have been quick to act in the transfer window and have brought in Nick Anderton, Max Hunt, Joshua Kayode and Elliot Watt so far in January, along with securing the services of Aaron Hayden and Gethin Jones.

The early signs look good, as the Cumbrians have seemingly put an end to their slump and have managed a win and a draw in their last two outings. Although they have been poor in front of goal in general this season,  there is also better news on that front as they have scored in four of their last five matches. However, with 10 goals conceded in those same matches, there is still plenty of work to be done.

Each side will fancy their chances

With both sides showing plenty of vulnerabilities at the moment, there is hope for each team that they will be able to claim the three points when they come together this Tuesday. The hosts may be known for their defensive strength but that is something which seems to have deserted them in recent months and the fact that they have conceded at least twice in each of their last three matches will be music to the ears of the visiting Cumbrians. This, combined with the fact that Carlisle have conceded in 93% of their away matches this season suggests that backing both teams to score is the way to go.

In terms of a correct score, we do not trust either side to be able to come out on top. The hosts average just 0.86 goals per game at home and concede an average of 0.93. Meanwhile, the visitors have scored an average of a goal per game on the road and, as previously stated, they have conceded in 93% of their away matches. With this in mind, we think that this will finish in a 1-1 draw.
