Goals likely again in Turkey

No-one was probably more surprised by PSV Eindhoven’s 5-1 first-leg win over Galatasaray than the Istanbul outfit’s coach Fatih Terim.

The ex-Turkey boss was unable to stem the fluid Dutch football that engulfed his team in Eindhoven last week to build a seemingly unassailable advantage.

But a glance at PSV’s record since Roger Schmidt took over in March 2020 shows that he is a coach that plays with the handbrake off and gives his side license to attack.

This won’t change even if PSV only need to avoid conceding four goals to ensure their passage to the next round – where they would face either Celtic or Midtjylland.

Galatasaray’s plan must be to push PSV’s dangerous wingers into defensive positions and be so tidy in possession that they can’t be counter-attacked.

They will have learnt a lot from the first-leg, but we doubt they can unsettle PSV enough to overturn the deficit.

The Dutch side have scored in all of their continental away games under Schmidt and will surely create chances to do so here, giving Galatasaray a greater mountain to climb.

Both teams to score looks a solid bet given the hosts have scored and conceded in six of their last seven on home soil.

And we’re going for a 2-1 home win here, although the scoreline could be anything, because PSV have conceded an average of 1.67 goals on their European travels since Schmidt took charge.
