Gateshead vs Charlton Predictions
- Charlton have failed to win any of their last five away FA Cup ties.
- Both teams have scored in seven of those eight home games featuring the Heed.
- Charlton have scored in nine of their 11 away games this season.
- Both teams have scored in the last four FA Cup away ties featuring Charlton.
Cracking cup tie in prospect
A cracking FA Cup second-round contest is in prospect when Charlton set their League One struggles aside and make the trip north to take on buoyant non-league outfit Gateshead on Friday.
The Heed are riding high in the National League North standings right now and there’s a real feel-good factor pervading the club. Mike Williamson’s men have turned the International Stadium into something of a fortress with seven wins out of eight to date and they will not fear the Addicks for one minute on Friday.
Charlton are the sort of team to swerve in the betting now, illustrated by the two results that followed their stunning 2-0 home win over then-leaders Plymouth last month.
The club posted footage of interim boss Johnnie Jackson telling his troops that they would go to Morecambe and Shrewsbury and win in a stirring post-match speech, but the Londoners threw away a two-goal lead in the former and were beaten 1-0 in the latter.
Jackson struggling to solve Addicks’ issues
There remain doubts about whether Jackson can solve the problems that a more experienced man in Nigel Adkins couldn’t prior to his departure and this FA Cup clash may provide further evidence one way or another.
Gateshead were at least a match for mid-table National League opponents Altrincham over two games but Charlton are still two rungs above that on the pyramid. However, the odds on the hosts avoiding defeat here are too tempting – particularly given Charlton have not won any of their last five away FA Cup ties.
Scoring won’t be a problem for a Gateshead side that have managed 24 goals (3.0 avg) at the International Stadium this season, but both teams have registered in 88% of their home games too. We’re picking a 2-2 draw in correct score betting because of the hosts’ potency – but also because Charlton are regular scorers on the road.
