Germany vs Spain Predictions

  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in each of the last four meetings between Germany and Spain.
  • A total of five goals have found the net in these four games.
  • Spain’s last two away games both ended in 1-1 draws.

Powerhouses collide in Stuttgart

The second iteration of the UEFA Nations League kicks off on Thursday evening and one of the first round of fixtures features two of the global footballing powerhouses.

Germany’s first Nations League squad blends experience with youth as the likes of Kevin Trapp, Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan are joined by rising stars such as Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. While not quite a full strength outfit, it’s a very formidable team and they have every chance of getting off to a good start here.

Spain bring a similar blend of old and new, although their less experienced players are somewhat less renowned on the global stage. Sergio Ramos is the top scorer in the squad, while their six named attackers have just 49 international appearances between them.

Both teams look back on successful qualifying campaigns

Neither of these sides have been in action since the Euro 2020 qualifiers ended in November, but both finished in fine shape. Germany have won six of their last seven competitive games and face a Spain side unbeaten  since November 2018, winning eight of ten games since.

That being said, each of Spain’s last two away games have ended in stalemates, with back-to-back 1-1 draws against Norway and Sweden marring an otherwise perfect qualifying record.

We can expect a similarly tight game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday. Both of these teams’ goalscoring heroics in the last couple of outings aren’t exactly representative.

Germany have netted ten in two games against Belarus and Northern Ireland, while Spain have plundered 12 against Malta and Romania. Both sets of attackers will face much more defensive resistance this time around.

History suggests low scoring affair on the cards

History reinforces this fact. Each of the last four meetings between Germany and Spain have seen fewer than two goals scored, with a grand total of five being netted across these games. Given the lack of match fitness and the rather experimental squads, we think backing another low scoring game is worthwhile.

We’re also expecting the spoils to be shared as well. The last meeting back in March 2018 ended in a 1-1 stalemate and each of Spain’s last two trips away have yielded the same result, so we’re backing that for our correct score prediction.
