Girona face European acid test
There’s a top-of-the-table showdown to enjoy in La Liga on Saturday evening when Girona entertain Real Madrid at the Estadi Montilivi.
Girona replaced their more famous Catalan contemporaries Barcelona as league leaders in midweek with a 2-1 victory over Villarreal, the Gironistes’ sixth straight win in Spain’s top flight.
It’s been a remarkable start to the season from Michel Sanchez’s side, who are participating in only their fourth-ever season in La Liga following promotion in 2021/22, while they finished tenth last term.
They’ve adopted a positive, attacking mindset for games, resulting in them being the joint-top scorers in the division but without one player responsible for the majority of the goal – Artem Dovbyk is Girona’s topscorer with three.
While Michel’s men won’t expect to maintain their lofty status, with the backing of the City Football Group, European qualification certainly isn’t out of the question, and neither is a repeat of their 4-2 win over Real Madrid from last season.
Real unreliable against Girona
Los Blancos were well beaten on their last visit to this corner of Catalunya, a result which extended a three-game winless run for Real against the relative minnows.
Even before the City Football Group’s purchase of Girona, this was a team that had often given Los Meringues problems and they are certainly no sure thing to justify their odds-on status for this game.
Real do come into the fixture off the back of a 2-0 win over Las Palmas that moved them up to second place as they bounced back from defeat in the Madrid derby.
Vinicius Jr made his return from injury against Las Palmas and he’ll add more cutting edge to what’s been a stuttering Real attack in his absence.
This is a fixture which has always produced goals in the past and there’s the promise of more to come with Girona unlikely to move away from their high-press just because they are facing Real.
Girona’s positivity has brought them plenty of success so far and should help them at least avoid defeat in what could end up being an entertaining score draw.
