Greuther Furth vs Borussia Monchengladbach Predictions
After a three month hiatus since the 2nd round, the DFB Pokal continues this week with eight fixtures for the round of 16 stage.
Hosts Greuther Furth, who hail from the German second tier, earned their spot in the round of 16 with an impressive 2-1 win at home to top flight Mainz 05 back in October. Heading into this off the back of a 4-1 win at home to Bundesliga 2 leaders Hannover 96 last weekend, the hosts should be up for a decent fight here.
Coach Dieter Hecking has helped get Borussia Monchengladbach back on track with two wins and a draw to start 2017. Gladbach should be out in full force here as a disappointing Bundesliga campaign means that progression in the DFB Pokal could prove essential to their European qualification efforts – the winner secures themselves a position in the Europa League.
Borussia M’gladbach are the favourites here at 8/15 with bet365 and while we fancy the visitors’ chances, we feel there’s better value to be had backing “both teams to score” here at 4/5 for the following reasons: though Borussia M’gladbach are much improved under coach Hecking, Gladbach have suffered with “travel sickness” for a while now. Two matches unbeaten on the road (W1 D1) can’t hide the fact that Gladbach have kept just two clean sheets on the road in the Bundesliga since May 2015 (and in just 11% of their matches this season). Meanwhile, Greuther Furth have proved their attacking quality just a few days back against top of the league Hannover 96 and knockout round cup dynamics mean that Furth will have no hesitation in getting men forward if they find themselves trailing approaching the closing stages of the match. Gladbach should have no problem finding the back of the net themselves with the return to form of forwards Raffael and Lars Stindl, either of whom we’d recommend for an anytime scorer bet here at 13/10 and 15/8 respectively, but with a few defensive creases still to iron out, there’s decent value in goals at both ends.
Regarding a correct score bet, we expect Gladbach to field a full 1st team squad in their bid for potential silverware and European qualification. Hence, based on incomparable differences in squad quality, a confident Gladbach should see themselves through to the next round with relative ease. With the match weighted in the visitors’ favour and goals at both ends a likelihood, we feel that Borussia M’gladbach to win 2-1 at 7/1 with bet365 offers some decent value here.
