Hamburg vs Augsburg Predictions

Hamburg found their first win of the season last Sunday in their thirteenth Bundesliga match against Darmstadt 98 (W1 D4 L8) – the “ever-present” side’s worst ever start to a new campaign. Hamburg have built some momentum and few would deny that the North Germans looked dominant and much improved in their 2-0 win over Darmstadt. Hamburg are now three matches unbeaten and have scored more goals over these three Bundesliga matches (6) as they did over the prior ten (4), even without the suspended Bobby Wood (see team news). Striker Michael Gregoritsch (pictured above) has been the main contributor in Wood’s absence. He took his tally to three over Hamburg’s last two matches with a goal last time out. He’d be a potential candidate for an anytime scorer bet (odds to follow).

Meanwhile, Augsburg may have fallen behind pace for their target of a top ten finish, but the Bavarians should be reasonably happy with how they’ve navigated a couple of tricky fixtures following the international break. Augsburg held European contenders Hertha Berlin and FC Cologne to goalless draws followed by a 1-1 draw at home to the in-form Eintracht Frankfurt over their last three Bundesliga matches.

Unfortunately, this match looks set to be a boring affair for the neutral fan. Augsburg’s recent tactics, particularly in matches on the road, has been a defensively focused style. Augsburg have conceded just one goal over their last four matches and boast the best defensive record of any team in the bottom half of the table (15 goals conceded). Consequently, however, Augsburg have also been one of the weakest sides going forward, also claiming the joint second-worst attack in the Bundesliga (only 11 goals scored). While, Hamburg have been improving week-by-week, scoring exactly two goals in each of their last four matches against Darmstadt, Bremen, Hoffenheim and Dortmund, we are yet to see them face off against a side as defensively solid, and against whom they have a rocky track record (see head-2-head). As such, we feel that under 2.5 goals at 7/10 has to be the safe bet here.

However, Hamburg’s form and momentum should make Hamburg 0.0 Asian Handicap at 13/20 a profitable bet. Especially when considering that Augsburg have only won one of their last eight Bundesliga away matches (12.5%). Following on from above, regarding a correct score bet, a 1-0 Hamburg win at 6/1 seems a reasonable shout.
