Hungary vs Sweden Predictions
Hungary made it back to back wins for the first time in a year on Sunday when they predictably hammered Andorra 4-0 at home. This followed on from their 2-0 win in Latvia last month as they recover from a disappointing start to World Cup qualifying.
They drew with Faroe Islands and then lost at home to Switzerland in their opening two games, which was a poor showing considering their excellent Euro 2016 performances, which saw them beat Austria and draw with Iceland and Portugal to make it through the group stages.
Hungary are underdogs to make it to Russia in 2018, but there is the potential for an upset with the historically inconsistent Portugal and Switzerland competing for the top two spots. They need to get a good run of form going though, and a win on Tuesday would take confidence up a level ahead of their next qualifier in Portugal.
Sweden haven’t looked too bad recently though. They lost 2-1 away to surefire group favourites France on Friday, but prior to that victories against Bulgaria and Luxembourg followed on from a draw against Netherlands to put them in a promising position as they look to make it to Russia.
They have understandably struggled to fill the void left by retired captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but generally their defensive output has looked solid for the majority of the time. They do have the potential to struggle against a surprisingly forward thinking Hungary side though.
The hosts have a number of midfielders capable of joining in the attack from deep, with top scorer Zoltan Gera and Balasz Dzsudzak the most notable. Adam Szalai is who I would back to score though. He netted again against Andorra to make it four goals in the qualifying campaign, and odds of 11/5 for him to score on Tuesday look good value.
Sweden have managed to score in their last six away days though, and Hungary’s defence does have a tendency to collapse, as shown with their 3-2 defeat at home to Switzerland recently. The hosts have netted in five of their last six at home though, so I think backing Both Teams to Score at 5/6 is a very good option. I’m also going for a 2-1 win for Hungary at 9/1.
