Lorient are still in with a shot of claiming 4th place in Ligue 1 as the middle of the table continues to be incredibly tight. They are in 10th position but are only five points adrift of 4th placed Caen. However, to claim that spot they could have to out perform five other teams for the remainder of the season, so they won’t be getting their hopes up yet. Instead, the Coupe De France could take priority for them. There are only two of the big teams left in the competition: The underperforming Marseille and runaway leaders Paris Saint Germain. This provides an excellent chance to the likes of Lorient and Gazelec Ajaccio to lift the trophy later in the season.

Gazelec Ajaccio’s main priority will be staying in Ligue 1, but to such a small team the Coupe De France will mean a huge amount to them. The visitors are still in with a good shout of defying the pre-season odds and saving themselves from relegation, with just four points separating them from safety.

Four of Lorient’s last six matches in all competitions have seen both sides hit the back of the net, and in the Coupe De France they have conceded three goals in three games against three lower league teams. Gazelec Ajaccio have managed to keep two clean sheets in their Coupe De France campaign, but against Ligue 1 opposition they have only kept a clean sheet in 15% of their matches this season. Four of the visitors last five matches have had goals from both teams too, as have five of their last six away matches. This makes odds of 5/6 for Both Teams to Score look excellent value for money.

I do think Lorient’s home advantage will give them the edge in the tie though, so a 3-1 win for the hosts looks like a good prediction considering Lorient’s recent attacking form. They have scored ten goals in their last four matches in all competitions and netted ten times in their three Coupe De France matches.
