Luzern vs Espanyol Predictions

Luzern were solid during the last round, as they won by a goal to nil both home and away, though they’ll probably have to pull out more against a side of Espanyol’s calibre. The Spaniards will be looking for another straightforward success after brushing aside Icelandic outfit Stjarnan, winning 7-1 aggregate.

On the face of it, Luzern’s victory over Faroe Islands outfit KÍ was nothing spectacular, though if we scratch beneath the surface, we can see that the Swiss side were far more dominant than the aggregate result suggested. Away from home, a single-goal victory was warranted, though at this venue, Luzern impressed greatly, as they created a whopping 4.72 expected goals for, and recorded no less than 34 shots, eight of which hit the target. Frankly, if that game was replayed ten times, Luzern would score four or five in nine of those ten.

Espanyol also proved themselves to be a creative side against weak opponents during the previous round. Both home and away, the Spaniards sparkled in the final third, ending the tie with no less than seven goals in the bag.

However, Espanyol didn’t look overly secure at the back when playing on the road against Stjarnan. It’s not that they conceded numerous scoring opportunities, but they were breached, while David Gallego’s men also gave off the impression that they’re susceptible to the break when dominating the ball, which is what they’re likely to do in Switzerland on Thursday.

In terms of overall quality, Luzern are unlikely to be a match for the side that finished 7th in La Liga last season, but their home performance during the previous round does suggest that they can be competitive.

If we consider the respective performances of Luzern and Espanyol in the last round, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ & Both Teams to Score’ stands out as a decent bet, while ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ also appeals. Ultimately, both teams have looked creative, while the fact that Espanyol both scored and conceded when looking reasonably open away from home during the previous round also points to goals. What’s more, if we consider the fact that Luzern have averaged 2.87 expected goals for in qualifying this term, alongside the fact that Espanyol are averaging 1.61, then it’s not tough to conclude that the prices on offer are slightly generous.
