Manchester United vs Southampton Predictions
Manchester United finished off St Etienne in midweek with a 1-0 win in France to follow on from their 3-0 victory at Old Trafford. In all honesty it could have been plenty more for the visitors as well in what was a fluid attacking performance, only marred by the injury which saw goalscorer Henrikh Mkhitaryan limp off in the first half.
This win makes it five on the bounce for Manchester United, and they are unbeaten in six in all competitions. Their only defeat of their last 24 outings was their 2-1 loss at Hull in the second leg of their League Cup semi final, and recently they really look to be upping their game after a bit of a poor spell in January.
Their League Cup campaign was largely a pretty straight forward showing from them, with the Red Devils opting for a relatively strong squad throughout the competition. They have beaten Northampton Town, Manchester City, West Ham, and Hull on their road to Wembley, scoring 11 goals and conceding four in the process.
Southampton’s has been a little more low key, but no less impressive it has to be said. They have knocked out Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal, and Liverpool and haven’t conceded a single goal on the way.
However, The Saints recent form isn’t so impressive. They did manage to beat Sunderland 4-0 away from home last time out but they have still only won five of their last 13 in all competitions and have lost seven times during that period. Their loss of Jose Fonte in January and Virgil van Dijk’s injury hasn’t helped, and the usually sound defence has conceded ten goals in their last four games.
Manchester United are in excellent form at the moment, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is definitely back to his best and is expected to start up front on Sunday. The Swedish striker has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, including two in the League Cup. He has found the net five times in his last five games and looks the best choice for our anytime goalscorer predictions at 1/1.
As far as the overall result goes, I think the advantage lies with Manchester United. They are in excellent form at the moment and Jose Mourinho has shown he isn’t taking any of the competitions lightly. They have won six of their last seven games in all competitions and scored 15 goals in the process, conceding just once. Odds of 4/5 for them to get a win over a Southampton side who have been in poor form recently look good value, so I’m backing that along with a 2-0 correct score predictions at 13/2.
