Marseille to Win

Reason for tip

Marseille, who have beaten Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax at home this season, have won six of their last seven home European games. They should have too much balance and forepower for an Atalanta side that have not won any of their last six matches and failed to score in three.

Atalanta 2-1

Reason for tip

Marseille have been great at home in Europe, scoring multiple goals in six of their last eight home ties, winning six and drawing two. They have scored 17 goals in their last five home games, so should find a way to beat an Atalanta side that have scored only three goals in their last six games. A 2-1 scoreline makes sense given Atalanta rarely concede more than a couple.

Igor Paixao To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Marseille’s Igor Paixao has scored three goals in two Champions League starts and a sub appearance this season and looks likely to extend that streak against a shaky Atalanta backline.

Marseille vs Atalanta Predictions

  • Marseille have won six of their last seven home European games
  • Marseille have beaten Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax at home this season
  • Atalanta have not won any of their last six matches, drawing five

Atalanta’s attacking woes could cost them in Provence

Atalanta may struggle to keep pace with Marseille in Wednesday’s Champions League clash at the Stade Velodrome, where the French side have been formidable in recent European outings. Ivan Juric’s men arrive in southern France winless in six and fresh off a 1-0 defeat to Udinese in which they failed to register a single shot on target.

La Dea’s form has dipped sharply since their 3-0 win over Club Brugge, with a 0-0 draw against Slavia Prague and a 4-0 loss to PSG exposing their lack of cutting edge. They’ve drawn five of their last six matches and scored just four goals in that span — a worrying trend ahead of a visit to one of Europe’s most intimidating venues.

Marseille, by contrast, have scored 17 goals in their last five home games across all competitions and are unbeaten in eight European fixtures at the Velodrome. Last weekend, Roberto De Zerbi’s side bounced back from a three-match winless run with a gritty 1-0 win over Auxerre, despite playing with 10 men for over half the match.

Paixao has been impressive in Europe

Atalanta have a solid pedigree in Europe — they overcame Marseille in the semi-finals of the Europa League en route to winning that competition two years ago and finished ninth in the league phase in last season’s Champions League.

But their current form suggests they’ll struggle to win this. The Italian side have failed to lead in any of their last six games and could not score in three of them.

Marseille’s in-form attackers, such as Igor Paixao and Mason Greenwood, should get them over the line here. Paixao has scored three goals in two Champions League starts and a sub appearance this season and looks likely to extend that streak against a shaky Atalanta backline.
