Telstar vs Sparta Rotterdam Predictions

It’s not been a great start to 2019 for Sparta Rotterdam. The six time Dutch champions began the year just two points behind leaders Den Bosch in the race for automatic promotion to Eredivisie, but they suddenly find themselves six points adrift after underwhelming draws against Cambuur and Roda JC. Henk Fraser’s side simply have to win this Friday against Telstar to stay in the mix, but that’s no guarantee based on their modest away record so far this term.

Sparta appeared to have the points sewn up against 5th placed Roda JC at Het Kasteel last week after goals from Bart Vriends and Mohammed Rayhi put them 2-0 up just 20 minutes in.

Henk Fraser’s men were scintillating in the opening exchanges as they have been at home all season long, but they failed to fully kill off Robert Molenaar’s side who worked their way back into the contest thanks to a brace from the irrepressible Mario Engels.

A game that should have been Sparta’s finished 2-2, and the Rotterdam outfit lost further ground in the title race as a result, with leaders Den Bosch and 2nd placed Twente both notching their second victories since the turn of the year.

So Sparta drop to 4th going into match day 22, where they face a Telstar side who they overcame 3-2 at Het Kasteel back in October. Rotterdam are favourites to complete a league double over the IJmuiden outfit, but they look a tad short in the betting at a shade of odds-on based on their overall away record this season and recent visits to IJmuiden Stadion.

Sparta have won just two of their ten away games this term, losing three, and they’ve been beaten on two of their last three trips to take on Telstar.

That will give underdogs Telstar some encouragement ahead of this Friday’s clash, but the hosts certainly need it after winning just one of their last seven in Eerste Divisie.

That success came against bottom side Jong AZ (0-2) on match day 17, and Mike Snoei’s charges have since lost to Jong PSV (2-4) and Volendam (1-0) before picking up 1-1 draws against Helmond Sport and NEC.

Last week’s stalemate in Nijmegen can be marked as a fairly decent result for Telstar who are struggling in 16th this term after finishing ten places higher in 2017/18, however they’ll need to step up again this week if they’re to get much from this fixture – even accounting for Sparta’s recent dip in form.

The visitors could win this match easily if they return to anything like they’re best in IJmuiden, but from a betting perspective they’re opposable at the prices and we’re keen to focus on goals here instead.

Sparta have conceded eight in their last four away games whilst Telstar have shipped ten in their last four appearances at home, so we should be set for an entertaining evening at IJmuiden Stadion.

The 3-2 scoreline in October’s reverse fixture continued the trend of high scoring matches between this pair with 24 goals now netted in the last half dozen meetings, so it makes sense to back over 3.5 goals for this week’s fixture, which we fancy to finish up honours even at 2-2.
