Marseille vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
It’s been a tough couple of years to be a Marseille fan. The struggling club sank to their lowest position in Ligue 1 since the turn of the millennium just two seasons ago as they finished 13th in the table, and whilst they did revive themselves to finish 5th last term it was still below par for one of the biggest clubs in France.
This season they have redeemed themselves though, wrapping up a top four spot long ago and still in with a chance of claiming the runners up position as they look towards the last game of the domestic campaign next weekend. They are just three points behind 2nd placed Monaco and some 17 points ahead of Rennes in 5th.
Before that potentially crucial final game of the season they have the small matter of the Europa League Final to contend with. They haven’t made it to a major European final since their 2003/04 UEFA Cup appearance, and their last victory in Europe was all the way back in 1993. They fully deserve their place in this one though, beating Salzburg, RB Leipzig, Athletic Bilbao, and Sporting Braga on their way to the Parc OL.
Atletico Madrid will provide their biggest challenge yet though. The Spanish giants are favourites to finish 2nd in the La Liga table ahead of next weekend’s curtain closer, and despite some early wobbles, they have really kicked on in the second half of the season.
Diego Simeone’s men have beaten Arsenal, Sporting Lisbon, Lokomotiv Moscow, and FC Copenhagen en route to the final, which has been a silver lining for the fans after their shock exit at the Champions League group stages. They have made it to the Champions League Final twice in the last five years too, although haven’t tasted victory in Europe since they won this competition in 2012.
Overall both of these sides are in slightly inconsistent form, with Marseille’s 3-3 draw at Guingamp on Friday making it one win in the last four competitive games and Atletico Madrid only winning three of their last six in all competitions.
One big worry for Marseille fans is the fact that they are seemingly incapable of winning away from the Orange Velodrome. They have only managed one win all season away from home in the Europa League, and whilst this is the neutral ground in Lyon, it’s still a problematic trend. They have failed to score in 90 minutes in five of their seven trips away since the group stages began too, and now face an Atletico Madrid side who have only conceded three goals in their eight Europa League outings this term.
Considering the strength of Atletico Madrid’s squad and their recent form, we think they’re excellent value to take the trophy on Wednesday, so we’re backing them to get the win and also opting for an Atletico Madrid Win to Nil alongside a 1-0 correct score predictions.
Antoine Griezmann looks the most likely candidate to get that decisive goal. The French striker has been in excellent form since the turn of the year and has netted in four of Atletico Madrid’s eight Europa League games, so we’re backing him to get on the scoresheet too.
