Both Teams To Score and Over 2.5 Match Goals

      Reason for tip

There have been three or more goals in nine of Marseille’s last 12 fixtures and the high-scoring trend should continue against Liverpool, who have managed only three clean sheets in 12 away games. Both teams have scored in five of the Reds’ last seven matches.

      Draw 2-2

      Reason for tip

Liverpool are unbeaten in 12 but they have shared the spoils in four of their last five matches and they may have to settle for another point at Marseille. That said, the goals look set to flow with so much attacking talent on show and siding with 2-2 could reap the rewards.

Reds hoping to put Burnley setback behind them

Four wins from six Champions League matches has Liverpool on the cusp of the top eight in the 36-team standings, but there is nothing straightforward about this trip to Marseille.

The Reds have pieced together a 12-game unbeaten run since suffering a humiliating 4-1 defeat at home to PSV on matchday five, but they have been held to draws in four of their last five outings.

Premier League strugglers Burnley snatched a point at Anfield in a 1-1 draw on Saturday, with Liverpool punished for their slack finishing as Dominik Szoboszlai missed a first-half penalty and Arne Slot’s side dominated the shot count 32-7.

Liverpool have now conceded in five of their last seven matches, which includes at home to League One outfit Barnsley in the FA Cup third round, and Marseille have an array of attacking talent at their disposal.

      Free-scoring French hosts have firepower

Roberto De Zerbi’s side sit third in Ligue 1, eight points behind leaders Lens, but Saturday’s 5-2 success at Angers came hot on the heels of 9-0 thrashing of Bayeux in the Coupe de France.

Prior to that, Marseille would have felt unfortunate to lose on penalties to Paris St-Germain in the French Super Cup final on neutral soil in Kuwait following a 2-2 draw, and they have plenty of former Premier League talent on show.

Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Angel Gomes, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt O’Riley, Emerson and CJ Egan-Riley all now ply their trade for OM and they have excelled at the Stade Velodrome, where they have won eight of their 12 matches this season.

Marseille have recorded home wins over Ajax and Newcastle in the Champions League and, having also triumphed 3-2 away at Union Saint-Gilloise and pushed Real Madrid close in a 2-1 defeat at the Bernabeu, they certainly have the resources required to trouble Liverpool.

The Reds are still creating plenty of chances and their forward talent speaks for itself, but Slot’s side have managed only three clean sheets in 12 away games.

In their last eight away outings, Liverpool have shipped three at Brentford, Leeds and Manchester City as well as conceding twice at Fulham, so Marseille can ensure this is a lively encounter.

That said, the French side have conceded in six of their last eight at home and their 2-1 win when hosting Newcastle saw a total of 38 shots, with the Magpies registering nine efforts on target.

That suggests that Liverpool can keep the home shot-stopper busy but they may have to settle for a fifth draw in six outings, with a thrilling 2-2 the way to go for correct-score bettors.
