Tip Reasoning

  • Newcastle have lost all nine meetings with top half sides, conceding 27 goals
  • Man City have won 22 of their last 27 meetings with Newcastle
  • The visitors have won their last seven in the league, scoring 20 times

Seven for City

Manchester City secured their seventh successive Premier League win in style in midweek, beating Leeds 7-0 at the Etihad. This time last year City were in the middle of an incredible run which sealed the league title, could we see the same again?

An eighth successive win looks likely, given that they meet a struggling Newcastle side. The Magpies are rank outsiders after losing their last two heavily, with new manager Eddie Howe facing another stern test this weekend.

City out in front

City have won nine of their last 10 games, only slipping up in a dead-rubber Champions League game. They’ve really stepped up in the last month, putting themselves out in front in the league. City are the leaders of the form table, the league table and they’re the second-highest scorers in the division and they boast the best defence.

City have put together a four-game winning streak on the road in the league which has seen them rack up 11 goals. With Newcastle in terrible shape heading into this one, back the visitors to boost their tally on Sunday.

Newcastle out of their depth

It’s been a terrible season for Newcastle, who have won only once this term. They are looking like relegation fodder as things stand, especially as they’ve just lost heavily to Liverpool and Leicester.

The hosts have been beaten by every top 10 side they’ve faced so far, conceding 27 goals across those nine defeats. City should make it 10 losses from 10, given they’ve won 22 of their last 27 league clashes with the Magpies.

The hosts have the league’s worst defence and that should see them blown away by the leaders. City have scored 20 times across their seven-game winning streak and with Newcastle shipping at least three in all their home meetings with top-half sides over 2.5 City goals is good value, while I’m backing a 3-1 away win.

Newcastle predicted lineup: Dubravka; Manquillo, Schar, Lascelles, Ritchie; Willock, Shelvey, Hayden; Joelinton, Wilson, Almiron

Man City predicted lineup: Ederson; Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Zinchenko; Gundogan, Rodri, De Bruyne; Sterling, Foden, Grealish
