Marseille vs Newcastle Predictions
- Newcastle beat Union SG 4-0 in their last Champions League away game
- Marseille lost 1-0 at home to Atalanta on Matchday 4
- Marseille are without a win in their last 12 European matches against English teams, including nine losses
- Newcastle have lost only two of their last 13 UEFA competition group stage/league phase matches away from home
Magpies respond with statement win
Newcastle can cash in on Marseille’s injury malaise to return from the Stade Velodrome with all three Champions League points on Tuesday. The Magpies recorded a statement win over Manchester City at St James’ Park on Saturday and, although this is a tough away trip on paper, should follow that up with another solid display in France.
Eddie Howe’s side responded to some critics with victory in an end-to-end affair that could have gone either way, but they held their nerve and boosted morale ahead of a crucial run of games.
Marseille are also coming off a good win at Nice, but the level of opposition goes up several notches from a mid-table Ligue 1 side under the injury curse. Newcastle have strength in depth in almost every position and look physically imposing in comparison to their hosts. Les Phoceens’ midfield of Arthur Vermeeren, Angel Gomes and Matt O’Riley could be in for a rough ride from the likes of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
Barnes back in the swing after double
The Premier League club have not been getting enough goals from their wide men and midfielders this term, but Harvey Barnes’ double against Pep Guardiola’s side was a step in the right direction. Barnes has scored three goals in four Champions League appearances this term and looks like the top candidate to get on the scoresheet on Tuesday too.
Marseille have goal threats in their side, but Newcastle’s defence has been pretty stingy in Europe this season. Howe’s men have kept three clean sheets in a row since their 2-1 home defeat to Barcelona on matchday one.
Backing the Magpies to win to nil must be a consideration given how little Roberto De Zerbi’s side created in their 1-0 home defeat to Atalanta earlier this month. But the odds on an away win are good enough to take a visiting clean sheet out of the equation.
Marseille’s dozen-game English drought to drag on
Marseille have a pretty awful record against Premier League sides in Europe, having lost nine of their last 12 and drawn the other three. Meanwhile, Newcastle have lost only two of their last 13 UEFA competition group stage/league phase matches away from home.
Nayef Aguerd, Amir Murillo, Hamed Traoré, Facundo Medina and Amine Gouiri are out for the hosts while Newcastle must again do without Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa with Anthony Gordon a doubt.
Back Newcastle to win this one and maintain their excellent run in this competition with a 2-1 scoreline. At least three goals have been scored in three of their last four games and six of Marseille’s last eight, so that could be worth adding to the bet.
