Marseille vs Paris Saint Germain Predictions

Marseille had a very disappointing season in Ligue 1 this year. Their 1-1 draw at bottom of the table Troyes on the final day of the season meant they ended the campaign in 13th position having picked up just 48 points from their 38 games.

They did manage to pick up some form towards the end of the season though as they embarked on a five match unbeaten streak and won three times. It was their Coupe De France semi final against Sochaux that kickstarted this form, because prior to that they were on a seven match winless streak.

In all honesty Marseille haven’t been that impressive in the Coupe de France either. They have enjoyed the luck of the draw up to now in the competition, with each of their last three cup fixtures being against lower league opposition. They haven’t even managed to dispatch of them comfortably either. Granville and Sochaux both only lost 1-0 and Trelissac were on the end of a 2-0 defeat despite the fact that Marseille fielded an almost full strength side.

Unimpressive isn’t a word you can use about Paris Saint Germain this season. Their 4-0 hammering of Nantes on the final day of the season took their points tally to an unprecedented 96, seven more than the previous Ligue 1 record and 31 more than their nearest competitors. The departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic took his league tally to 38 for the season with a brace on Saturday, and Angel Di Maria’s double assist saw him finish the season with 18 league assists to his name.

Ibrahimovic has also netted five times in the Coupe de France this season, helping him towards a total return of 48 goals in 50 appearances. Saturday’s cup final will be his final match in a Paris Saint Germain shirt after four seasons and 154 goals in 179 appearances for the French giants. The Swedish talisman’s nine goals in his last seven outings have helped Paris Saint Germain to six wins and one draw since their defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League.

This elimination from the Champions League will have hurt Paris Saint Germain, but it’s still been a very productive season. Their victory in the Coupe de la Ligue was their 3rd consecutive lifting of that trophy, and their Ligue 1 triumph was their 4th consecutive triumph. A win on Saturday would make it back to back domestic trebles for the dominant Paris Saint Germain.

With Ibrahimovic looking to leave Paris Saint Germain on a high I think we can expect a performance from him on Saturday. When he’s on form there is little anybody can do to stop PSG, so I’m expecting a few goals. They have won three of their last four games 4-0 and 23 of their league matches ended with a margin of victory greater than one goal. This makes odds of 19/20 for a Paris Saint Germain -1 Handicap Win look excellent value, and I’m backing that along with a 3-0 correct score prediction at 7/1.
