Moreirense vs Benfica Predictions

  • Moreirense have lost three pre-season games without scoring (0-4 v Braga, 0-3 v Santa Clara & 0-2 v Vizela)
  • Benfica beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 in an away Champions League qualifier in their last game.
  • Benfica have won their last seven away Primeira Liga matches.
  • Haris Seferovic has scored ten goals in his last nine away league matches for Benfica.

Eagles soaring under Jesus again

Benfica begin their Portuguese title bid with a trip to north to take on a Moreirense side that finished eighth last season.

Jorge Jesus’ side returned from Moscow in midweek with a superb 2-0 away win against Spartak that stands them in good stead to reach the play-off round.

That followed an unbeaten warm-up programme that featured victories over Casa Pia, Almeria and Lille before a 1-1 draw with Marseille in their final exhibition match, so the Eagles should be in good heart for this.

Contrast those results to the run of dismal pre-season losses posted by Moreirense, whose latest setback was a 2-0 loss to newly-promoted Vizela.

Os verdes e brancos drew nine of their final 13 home league games last season, including 1-1 draws with all three big clubs, but aren’t in the form to stop a revitalised Benfica.

The Lisbon giants won their final seven away trips of last season – some by some wide-margin scores – and will surely come away from Braga with the victory on Saturday.

Benfica are still awaiting the return of last season’s top assist man Darwin Nunez, but Rafa Silva is back on song and new addition Joao Mario is running their midfield now.

And in Haris Seferovic they have a striker that feasts on goals away from home. The Swiss hitman scored ten in his last nine away league appearances of last season and looks very playable in the anytime market.

Our main bet though is Benfica -1 on the Handicap, whereby the visitors must win by two clear goals to claim a payout, because of their recent form and impressive end-of-campaign record last term.

All seven of the wins during that superb closing stretch were by two goals or more and we are taking them to start the league season in the same way with a 2-0 road win.
