New York Red Bulls vs Seattle Sounders Predictions

New York Red Bulls began their MLS Supporters Shield defence horribly after such a good showing last year. They opened the campaign with back to back defeats against Toronto FC and Montreal Impact, and even when they got their first points on the board in a 4-3 thriller against Houston Dynamo they couldn’t break out of their poor start to the season.

They went on to lose four more matches before they added any points to the three from the win against Houston Dynamo, but since then they have looked like the New York Red Bulls of last season.

Coming into this match they can look back on a run of six wins in eight games in all competitions, with only one defeat on their record during this period and a massive 7-0 thrashing of cross-city rivals New York City. They also beat FC Dallas 4-0 and Toronto FC 3-0 during this run, which has propelled them up to 2nd in the MLS Eastern Conference. They are four points adrift of leaders Philadelphia Union, but they will be pleased with this considering their horrendous start.

Seattle Sounders, like their opponents, also won their US Open Cup fixture in midweek against Kitsap Pumas, but their form this season has been inconsistent. The win on Thursday was their 2nd in a row, but prior to that they had lost three on the bounce and have already racked up seven defeats from their 13 MLS games this season.

This puts them down in 9th position in the Western Conference, although they do have games in hand on the majority of the teams above them. However, if they don’t manage to put together a good run of results soon they will be worried about the possibility of missing out on the playoffs.

A lot of Seattle Sounders’ poor results come on the road as well. Their win against DC United at the start of June was their first away win of the season, ending a run of four defeats and a draw for them. New York Red Bulls, on the other hand, have won five of their seven home matches despite their poor start to the campaign, and they have won each of their last four at the Red Bulls Arena, scoring 11 goals and conceding just two.

This makes odds of 8/11 for a New York Red Bulls Win look very good value to me, and I’m going for a high scoring 3-1 correct score prediction at 12/1 as well.
