Coventry vs Hull City Predictions
- Coventry won 17 of their 23 home Championship games last season
- Both league meetings between these sides last season finished 0-0
- Hull have won just one of their last seven away games in normal time
Promoted pair face off in Coventry
Coventry entertain Hull in the Premier League on Saturday in a match-up between two of the promoted teams, who have made contrasting starts to the new season.
The Tigers stunned Manchester United with a 2-0 win in Hull last weekend, while Coventry were given a reality check as they went down 3-0 at champions Arsenal.
It is fair to say that Hull rode their luck at times against United and Coventry did respond well to their defeat to the Gunners by beating League One outfit Plymouth in the EFL Cup in midweek, and Saturday’s game looks a perfect chance for the Sky Blues to claim their first points of the season.
Coventry can make home advantage count
Hull may have enjoyed a dream start against United but they gave up a lot of chances in that game and didn’t see a great deal of the ball, finishing with just 28% of the possession.
With home advantage, Coventry can get a win over the line on Saturday as they were excellent at home in the Championship last season with 17 wins in 23 games, while Hull had a mixed road record and they’ve managed just one away win in their last seven competitive trips across all competitions.
The Tigers were also held to a 1-1 draw at Stoke in the EFL Cup in midweek and whether they avoid an immediate return to the second tier or not this season will probably be dedicated by their results at home, rather than on their travels.
Coventry didn’t offer much at Arsenal but they won’t be the only team to go to the Emirates this season and be dominated so there isn’[t a great deal we can take from that performance. On the basis of their results at the Coventry Building Society Arena last season, they should be able to grind out a win over Hull.
Goals could be at a premium
Hull will probably set up to keep things tight and they should be able to frustrate Coventry for large periods, but the hosts have enough quality to make a breakthrough and this game could well be decided by just one goal.
Both Championship games between these sides ended goalless last season and in both contests it was the home team who looked the more likely winner.
Coventry have added some attacking quality to their team over the summer and after hitting four against Plymouth in midweek they should be able to grab their first league goal of the season against Hull, and that may well be the decider.
Coventry’s summer signing Taiwo Awoniyi impressed against the Pilgrims but that performance probably wasn’t enough to displace Ellis Simms just yet. Simms had 13 times in the Championship last season and scored a couple of goals in pre-season, he looks a contender for an anytime effort against Hull on Saturday.
