Brentford Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Newcastle were dumped out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday’s and there failed defence of that trophy is another black mark on a season which is threatening to peter out. The Magpies start this round of fixtures, and although still in the Champions League, their current form is poor and they may struggle to lift themselves for this visit of high-flying Brentford. The Bees arrive to the north east in seventh spot and have had a week to prepare for this clash which sees Newcastle have to overcome a three-day turnaround. An away looks well within reach.

Brentford 3-1

Reason for tip

Newcastle have conceded seven goals in two matches this week and they could be vulnerable to a Brentford side who have lost just two of their last nine matches. Last week’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa came despite being down to ten men, but prior to that, they had scored two or more goals in three of their previous four fixtures away from home. The Magpies looked tired in their losses to Liverpool and Manchester City this week, and Brentford could take advantage of low energy levels in the home ranks by firing in three goals with one in response.

Yoane Wissa To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Yoane Wissa has endured a frustrating start to life at St James’ Park, but the former Brentford man could be a good goalscoring option against his former side on Saturday. Wissa has bagged just three goals for the Magpies following his move up north, but injuries have played a big role in that and he will be determined to make up for lost time, particularly against the team he left in the summer. Wissa came on at the break in the midweek loss at Manchester City so he could be one Newcastle player who has a bit more spark in his legs for this encounter.

Newcastle vs Brentford Predictions

  • Newcastle have conceded seven goals in two matches this week.
  • The Magpies have won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions.
  • Brentford have won six of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Newcastle set to be stung by Bees

Brentford have exceeded all expectations this term following the transition from former boss Thomas Frank to current custodian Keith Andrews, and there could be more to come from the west London outfit who we predict to leave the north east with at the very least a point this week.

Andrews’ men stunned third-placed Aston Villa with a 1-0 win at Villa Park last week, a result even more impressive given they had to play the whole of the second half with just ten men following Kevin Schade’s 42nd-minute dismissal, and they will be confident of not letting the victory go to waste with another positive result a week later.

Things could have looked even better for Brentford if it weren’t for last month’s 2-0 losses to Nottingham Forest and Chelsea, but they were there side for much of the defeat to the Blues and they look to be taking on Newcastle at just the right time.

The Magpies are licking their wounds after the defence of their EFL Cup came to an end against Manchester City during the week, a 3-1 loss which came hot on the heels of a 4-1 hammering at Liverpool last Saturday, and their season is starting to fall apart at just the wrong time.

Sitting 11th after 24 matches, the Magpies must find a response quickly but the truth is they looked shattered in this week’s defeats and the quick turnaround to this fixture will do them few favours.

Brentford can take advantage having had over a week off to prepare, but there is enough juice in the price to keep the draw on side in the double-chance market.

Goals likely to flow

Brentford have scored just 13 league goals on the road this term, but they are fancied to win this match 3-1, just as they did on home soil earlier in the campaign.

A hectic schedule looks to be catching up with Newcastle who could quite easily fall apart should Brentford get their noses in front.

The Magpies have conceded seven goals in two matches this week, and even their raucous home following at St James’ may struggle to lift them following three defeats in their last four outings.

Eddie Howe’s men have conceded three or more goals in three of their last five outings on home soil and the buzzing Bees could extend that record on Saturday.

Wissa to show some resistance

Yoane Wissa scored 45 goals in 91 appearances for Brentford and the DR Congo hotshot could serve a reminder to his former side of his talents by getting on the scoresheet against his old pals.

Wissa has had a stop-start beginning to life in the north east, mainly due to injury and he has bagged just three goals so far for his new side.

The forward came off the bench in Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final loss at Manchester City, so may have more juice in his legs compared to some his jaded team-mates.

That and a desperation to do well against his old team could spur him on, so we predict a goal for the ex-Bee on Saturday.
