Northern Ireland became the neutrals’ heroes in the summer as they made it through the group stages against all odds in Euro 2016. Their win at home to Ukraine was enough to see them through despite defeats to Germany and Poland, and their 1-0 defeat to Wales in the knockout stages was far from a humiliation.

Overall it was a summer to remember for Northern Ireland fans, but the hard work starts again as they look to out qualify the likes of Germany, Czech Republic, and Norway and make it to Russia in 2018.

So far they aren’t doing a bad job at all. Their 4-0 hammering of Azerbaijan on Friday made it seven points from their opening four games and puts them in 2nd position, only behind the perfect record of world champions Germany.

Northern Ireland’s two victories have come against the likes of San Marino and Azerbaijan though, and it will be a much tougher test trying to beat the talented Croatia squad.

The visitors beat Iceland 2-0 on Saturday to make it three wins and one draw from their opening four qualifying games. This puts them two points clear at the top of their group and in a very strong position to make it to Russia.

It’s no surprise either given the talent in their ranks. The likes of Luka Modric, Ivan Perisic, Ante Coric, Marko Rog, Ivan Rakitic, and Mateo Kovacic make up an incredibly talented midfield that would make it into any team in the world. Their lack of star striker has been mentioned, but Mario Mandzukic does a pretty good job of finishing off the chances made by these midfielders. Croatia’s victory over Iceland made it 15 matches in a row that they have remained undefeated in normal time, with 11 of those ending in victory. Away from home they have won four of their last five as well, so Northern Ireland could be in for a tough evening.
