NEC can make their mark in Europe

NEC Nijmegen are back in Europe for the first time since their 2008/09 UEFA Cup campaign, and the Dutch outfit should bring the thrilling approach that saw them finish third in the Eredivisie into the Champions League qualifiers.

NEC were able to cause problems for some of the Eredivisie’s biggest names, claiming a 3-2 win at PSV Eindhoven, a 4-2 win at Feyenoord, and sharing score draws home and away against Ajax.

NEC failed to score in only one of their 34 league games last season, while they progressed to the cup final thanks to another 3-2 win over PSV in March.

Expectations are high for Olympiacos, who won the Conference League in 2024. They lost to Bayer Leverkusen in the play-off round of last season’s Champions League, but they’re forced into the qualifiers this term after surrendering the Greek title.

Olympiacos should prove too strong for NEC, having drawn 1-1 with PSV and won 2-1 at Ajax in last season’s Champions League. However, the visitors are an attack-minded side, and they could play their part in another five-goal thriller.
