Having beaten Pisa 1-0 in the first leg of their play-off clash on Tuesday, Fabio Caserta’s Benevento have one foot in the Serie B play-off final as they bid for an immediate return to the top-flight. They simply need to avoid defeat in Tuscany to keep their promotion hopes alive, and may be confident of doing so against a miserly Pisa side.

While Luca D’Angelo’s men finished third in the Italian second tier, just two points shy of automatic promotion and just four away from champions Lecce, they did so off the back of some tremendous defensive performances, so may not be best suited to chasing this tie. Indeed, their record of 48 regular-season goals was just the 10^th-best in the league, although their 35 goals conceded in 38 games represents the third-best defensive record.

Benevento, meanwhile, finished their regular campaign with four losses in five and looked the least-prepared team in the play-offs, but Serie B’s highest-scoring outfit (62 goals) have shown a newfound solid streak by beating Ascoli and Pisa, the division’s sixth- and third- best sides, by a single goal. Including those post-season match-ups, Benevento have faced top-eight sides on 14 occasions this term, 10 of which contained under 2.5 goals.

Tuscan affair likely to be tense

Given the stakes at play and the miserly record of Pisa, backing under 2.5 goals looks a strong play for what should be a nervy contest, with the results markets best overlooked considering neither side ended the regular season in good form.

Pisa only lost one regular-season home game, but Benevento have proven their ability to compete with those at the top of Serie B, so a tense 1-1 draw could be a decent correct score prediction.
